Chad continues to review the basic principles of thermodynamics in the context of organic chemistry. He begins with a review of entropy, the relevant factors that affect it, and the relevance for organic chemistry. He then reviews Gibbs free energy (ΔG) and how it is related to when a reaction is spontaneous (- ΔG) or nonspontaneous (+ ΔG). He then reviews the relationship between ΔG, ΔH, andΔS and how to predict under what conditions a reaction will be spontaneous:

ΔG = ΔH – T(ΔS)

Chad concludes the lesson by discussing the relationship between the standard ΔG and the equilibrium constant (Keq) and how either can be used to determine when a reaction will favor the reactants or products at equilibrium:

ΔG° = -RTlnKeq
