Chad gives a succinct lesson on the reactions of Grignard Reagents and Gilman Reagents (organometallics) with carboxylic acid derivatives. The reaction of acid halides, acid anhydrides, and esters with excess Grignard reagents are explained with the reaction of a Grignard reagent with an ester being the most commonly tested upon. The lesson is concluded with the Gilman reaction which involves the reaction of acid halides and acid anhydrides with one equivalent of the less reactive Gilman reagent (an organocuprate).
