Chad provides a brief lesson describing the very few reactions of ethers. He begins with crown ethers, such as 18-crown-6, which are used to solvate alkali metal ions in order to dissolve certain ionic reagents in organic solvents. He then presents the acid cleavage of ethers including the complete mechanism. He shows how with most ethers the addition of excess hydrohalic acid will produce two alkyl halides with phenyl ethers being an exception in producing one alkyl halide and a phenol.
