Chad provides a brief lesson on the formation of cyclic acetals to serve as a protecting group for aldehydes and ketones which temporarily protects them from reactions with strong nucleophiles. He begins by showing an example of the formation of a cyclic acetal using ethylene glycol including the cyclic acetal formation mechanism. He then shows the reversibility of the reaction via hydrolysis with H3O+. He then provides a specific sample synthesis problem involving the protecting of an aldehyde from a grignard reagent by conversion to a cyclic acetal that demonstrates the usefulness of cyclic acetals as protecting groups.
