Chad reveals that terminal alkynes (pKa ~ 26) are considerably more acidic than a typical alkene (pKa ~ 44) or alkane (pKa ~ 50). He then goes on to show that sodium amide, NaNH2, is typically the preferred base for deprotonating a terminal alkyne to form an acetylide ion as sodium hydroxide, NaOH, is not strong enough to carry out this reaction.
