Alpha Hydrogen Acidity | Enolates & Enols | 21.1 Organic Chemistry

Chad provides a comprehensive introduction to the acidity of the alpha hydrogen for carbonyl compounds. This includes an introduction to enolates, the anion resulting from the deprotonation of an alpha hydrogen and an explanation for the relative acidities of aldehydes, ketones, esters, and beta-diketones. An introduction to LDA (Lithium DiisopropylAmide) is also included as it is the strong base most commonly used to form enolates. The lesson is concluded with a review of keto-enol tautomerization (acid-catalyzed specifically) as enolates and enols will be the major nucleophiles involved in the reactions described in the rest of the chapter.
