Reduction of Ketones & Aldehydes | NaBH4 vs LiAlH4 | 19.6 Organic Chemistry

66.7K views on YouTube

Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on the reduction of ketones and aldehydes. He begins with hydride reduction using either sodium borohydride (NaBH4) or lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4). The full mechanisms of NaBH4 reduction and LiAlH4 reduction are presented. He also explains the difference in reactivity between the two and the difference in reaction conditions (nabh4 vs lialh4). The lesson is concluded with a novel complete reduction (complete deoxygenation) of aldehydes and ketones by conversion to thioacetals and reduction with hydrogen and Raney nickel.
