Chest out, not shoulders up. When taking a deep breath for singing, many people mistakenly lift their chest and draw in their belly. However, the ideal breath is almost the opposite. Your chest may rise a little, but it shouldn’t lift excessively if you have a tall, confident posture. Meanwhile, instead of pulling your belly inward, allow it to expand as your lungs fill with air. This relaxed inhale may feel unfamiliar at first, but it’s more comfortable and aligns with your body’s natural function. Try this breath through your nose, letting your belly move with your breath like a balloon slowly filling and emptying. Practicing this while lying down or in child’s pose can be helpful.

Breath control comes from abs and vocal folds. Breath control is not just about abdominal muscles; your vocal folds play a crucial role too. Abdominal engagement helps prevent over-relying on your vocal folds, which can cause breathy or tense tones. Try this: take a relaxed inhale, then exhale on a hiss, feeling your belly engage. Switch between a hiss and a hum to feel the difference. Then, try different onsets: breathy (like “hah”), balanced (vibration and airflow together), and glottal (like “apple” or “uh-oh”). Notice how each affects your tone and breath control.

It’s possible to take in too much air. Contrary to popular belief, more air isn’t always better. The size of your breath should match the phrase you’re about to sing. Taking in too much air can lead to challenges in controlling it, causing breathiness or tension. If you find yourself struggling to manage your breath, try smaller, more natural inhales.

Professional singers plan their breaths. Pros don’t leave breathing to chance—they plan it! In their sheet music, you’ll often find check marks or commas to indicate breaths. Planning your breaths ensures they match the demands of each phrase and become part of your muscle memory.
