This video covers how to explore your full range, so that high notes don’t scare you and you become more comfortable with all facets of your voice.

Almost every beginning singer is limited by their range – or at least, they feel limited. And it’s difficult to sing freely when you’re nervous about how high or low a note is, and how it’ll sound.

It helps to understand that your voice has different functions, and different sounds it’s capable of. Your speaking voice, sometimes called your “chest voice”, is just one function, and it does have a limited range. The end of your speaking voice is not the end of your singing voice.

And although the long-term goal is a unified sound from bottom to top, with no audible cracks or breaks, it’s not realistic for 99% of beginning singers. We all have cracks and instabilities to work through as we reach for pitches higher than our speaking voice naturally goes.

I invite you to make peace with that reality, and embrace your superpower to start accessing higher pitches: your head voice!

To help you find this function, let’s try a few different sounds. First, an excited “whoo” or “whee.” Now make the sound of an owl hooting. And last, try a cuckoo clock sound. Hopefully you’ve now found your head voice function. Yes, it’s lighter than your speaking voice, and it might be breathy or weak sounding right now, but that’s okay. Start using it, and it will strengthen over time.

Let’s try a short exercise where we find our head voice with one of those sounds. I’ll play the pitch and then you approximate it with your sound of choice. Then, we’ll carry that same sound and feeling into a descending ‘321’.

Now that you’ve sung a bit in head voice, feel the contrast between your speaking voice (chest voice) and head voice function. We’ll jump an octave, saying HEY hoo HEY, with chest or speaking voice on the low note and head voice on the high note.

Take this same pattern, but slide instead of jumping, for an exercise to begin building a smooth transition through your mix.
