This is the final installment of our 3-part “how to sing better” series, focusing on how to instantly make songs easier and sound better.

This tip is simple, but often overlooked by self-taught singers. Drop the lyrics and practice the melody on a syllable or vowel instead.

What you choose for that syllable or vowel depends on your voice and the desired sound you’re going for. I recommend thinking of a vocal warmup or exercise that gets your voice working well. But if you don’t know where to start, something like WUH or MUH is generally a safe bet.

For example, let’s say we’re working on “Amazing Grace”. Drop the lyrics, and sing the whole melody on WUH. If you know the melody, join me!

Song work: Amazing Grace on syllable (WUH)

C C7 F C
Amazing Grace! (how sweet the sound)
G
That saved a wretch like me!
C C7 F C
I once was lost, but now am found,
Am G C
Was blind, but now I see.

This is helpful because it simplifies your singing; rather than constantly changing vowels and consonants, there’s just one shape to maintain. This allows you to focus on consistent tone, breath and phrasing first.

It also sets you up for easier transitions and better tone quality over all, because something like UH is a neutral vowel, meaning it’s equally suited for head voice and speaking voice, and can even help guide you into mixing.

An added benefit – and not an insignificant one – is the confidence boost you’ll get, since you’ll instantly sound better and feel more relaxed.

Spend some time with that syllable/vowel (and experiment with different ones to find what feels and sounds best for you – you can literally sing on anything that helps). Then when you add lyrics back, use your syllable/vowel of choice as a reference. That vowel can be a good guide for vowel modification, if needed. For example: “me” in Amazing Grace might sound better with a shade of UH – perhaps closer to MIH as in MITT [demonstrate].

Thank you for watching, and I trust this series has given you at least a few tips to sound better right away.
