What is breathwork, and why is it so important for singers to work on their breath? The simple answer is that the breath is the fuel and engine for our voice. We often refer to this as our vocal support.

Here is a breath flow with 3 exercises that all singers should use before singing.

Exercise #1: The first tip is that you breathe low into your belly and back. Let your belly drop and expand in all directions. You can even gently lift your arms like you are going to hug a big tree. Feel your ribcage expand and then allow it to contract and breathe like this a few times before singing. You can start by guiding your body with some conscious effort, but eventually just allow your body to do this naturally. You can tap into deep breathing with just the focus and intention of your mind!

Next exhale as if you are trying to fog a mirror. This technically doesn’t even need to make a sound. Just feel for warm air on your hand and you know you are slowing down the airflow and starting to manage your breath. We are still exhaling, but you might notice a little bit of resistance pushing out against your breath. This creates a floating or suspended feeling.

Moving your arms in the same direction as your breath can sometimes help you into this feeling a little more. It’s a resistance or drag against your natural exhale and the process will slow your breath even more. This type of exercise is great for your low and relaxed notes. You can even start to gently sing on a Ha just after this like a big relaxed sigh or Yawn feeling. Just let it gently fall away.

Exercise #2: Now start to wake up your Appoggio Breathing. We create resistance of air and build up pressure under our vocal folds by continuing to flex out against our exhale. In that state of expansion and suspension we can build up extra pressure to sing higher pitches. Using a hiss on ts will help you feel this activity. Make a small shape at the front of your mouth for only a little bit of air to escape.

Place your hand below your belly button and breathe low. Then take another small breath on top of the one you just made. Begin to suspend out against your exhale a little more with that hiss sound.

Your body will naturally start to cave in by then end. At this point we have to let go to allow our breath to recover by letting go. It will often get even deeper as you do this a few more times in a flow. Ultimately you don’t need to make much sound at all to feel this more pressurized exhale.

Exercise #3: Breath is dynamic and it’s not just a simple on and off as we sing with vocal support. Let’s put these two exercises together now. We start by fogging the mirror, begin to suspend out into a ts sound and then finally release back into a Ha like we are fogging a mirror. Now play with expanding and relaxing between these two states with your breath throughout your exhale.

Exercise #4: Lastly try singing up and down on a hollow hum while continuing the same feeling with your breath. As the body suspends out against the exhale the pitch rises and as it relaxes the pitch falls. We never need to push or flex inward as this will push out the air too quickly and cause vocal instability.

Great work! Making breathwork exercises a regular part of your warm up routine will help your voice stay receptive and healthy.
