Head voice, or falsetto, is a function of every voice. It’s generally used for higher pitches, but can be used on lower pitches for a softer sound or for stylistic effect.
I’m Camille with 30daysinger.com, and these are 3 of my favorite exercises for training a strong and stable head voice.
1. Semi-Closed
Any semi-closed position will do! My favorites include the lip trill, puffer fish, and NG sound, like the end of the word “sing.” I encourage you to try these out, and find what works best for you. What we’re looking for is a clean, focused tone where we’re not leaking extra air.
2. Gradual Open
The initial OO vowel helps us find an easy, light head voice sound, but it’s not always conducive to a strong sound with higher volume. For that, we’re gradually opening up from OO to OH to AH.
3. Zee
That initial Z sound gets our air flowing, the EE helps us navigate into higher pitches with ease, and then we open up to an OH.
