If you’re a fan of beautiful, light high notes but they sound strained or don’t even come out, this lesson is for you!
Find the function
The range we use for head voice or falsetto is higher than our speaking voice range, and the function is also different. That means you need a different approach, and it won’t feel or sound exactly like your speaking voice or chest voice. So our first step is to use whatever sound works for you to find this head voice or falsetto function. Tried and true favorites include an owl hoot, an excited high-pitched whee or woohoo, and a cuckoo clock sound. Try each of those with me, and remember the one that feels easiest.
Warm up to your desired pitch and ideally past it
The highest pitch in Billie Eilish’s “What was I made for” is an E5. So if you’re working on that song, you want to warm up to E5 on something swoopy and light, and if you’re able, aim for even higher. That way, the highest pitch in the song doesn’t feel like the ceiling for your voice, because it isn’t! Your warmup can use any sound or vowel that works for you.
Sing the melody on something swoopy and light
Hoo or woo are great options. Let’s say now we’re working on “Amazing Grace”, and our highest section is “that saved a wretch like me.” Drop those lyrics and sing the melody on a swoopy hoo or woo. Stay in that mode by flowing directly from woo or hoo into the lyrics.
Add the lyrics back, assessing if any consonants are interrupting your flow
In my experience, a consonant can make or break this soft floaty sound. In the previous example, you might get tripped up on the “k” sound of the word “like.” The fix here is to soften that consonant, to barely pronounce it. In fact, you can practice first on “lie me,” and then add just a touch of “k” sound back in. Give it a try!
I hope you make good use of these tips for the next song you sing with some beautiful, floaty high notes!
