I’m Camille, singer and vocal coach with 30 Day Singer, and these are my 3 most important singing tips.

1. Vowels are (almost) everything

If I told you that vowels are the key to wider range, better tone, more strength – would you believe me? Let’s say you do believe me – you might be thinking, “which vowels?” and “what does that mean practically, since I’m not in control of the vowels in the words I sing?”

Let’s address the first part: understanding vowels really is key to better singing. I’ll try to prove it to you. Take the issue of range: try sliding from low to high on a wide open A vowel, like the word YEAH or CAT. Now try the same thing on an OO vowel, like the word YOU or COOL. That probably went quite a lot smoother! Because vowels literally change the size and shape of our instrument (our mouth and throat), the vowel we choose impacts our tone quality, strength, and range. Great voice teachers use vowels to your advantage in designing warmups and exercises to improve your voice.

What about that second question you might have had: what are we supposed to do when singing actual songs, since we can’t change the lyrics? The secret of skilled singers is: you can change the lyrics through vowel modification. A really popular example can be found in countless songs. How do singers sing the word “baby” or “crazy”? It’s hardly ever “babeeee”, but more like “bay-bih” or “cray-zay”. Listen carefully and watch live performances so you can start picking up on vowel modifications like these.

2. Breathing is (mostly) natural

A lot has been said about breathing and singing. Its importance is undeniable – there is no sound without breath, and the breath demands of singing are greater than that of casual speech. However, an over-emphasis on breath often leads beginning singers to hold their breath (which isn’t good) or over-breathe, meaning they take in a huge amount of air that they don’t need for the phrase at hand and can’t comfortably use. Should you incorporate some gentle breathing exercises into your practice? Yes! Start your practice with some low, relaxed belly breaths; feel the gentle engagement of your abdominal muscles on a hiss and then on a hum. Use semi-closed exercises like lip trills or straw singing to train consistent airflow. But please understand that breathing for singing should feel natural, and not all issues we encounter are magically solved by “fixing our breath”.

3. You need songs, not just exercises, to sing better

Exercises are crucial. We can design exercises to work on specific functions and skills. In some ways, exercises can be easier than songs, because we’re in control of the pattern, the syllable, and the range. That’s just one reason why we need to sing actual songs to get better at singing. I know that might sound obvious, but I hear this from beginners a lot: “don’t I need to do exercises for a while? Shouldn’t I spend a few months strengthening my voice before attempting a song?” No! As important as exercises are – no matter what your level of experience – we want to improve our ability to sing songs.

For beginners, I recommend choosing songs that feel easy for you and ideally that have a limited range, meaning you might need to put Beyonce and Bruno Mars on the shelf for while. Then, when you’re in the swing of things, try to choose songs that feel just outside of your comfort zone to work on – meaning you can almost sing them, or you can sing them, but you want to sound better while doing so. Avoid songs that are so challenging and daunting that any attempt to work on them feels frustrating, disheartening, and even physically painful. I’m all for a healthy challenge, but we get the best results when we’re going for the very next step up, rather than a huge scary jump.
