I’m Camille, singer & teacher with 30 Day Singer, and I can virtually guarantee you already know how to use your chest voice. Your chest voice, as voice teachers have called it, is your speaking voice applied to singing. That’s it! You might speak and you might sing. The difference is minimal. Singing is elongated and might include vibrato at times, but the function is basically the same. That makes developing your chest voice easy in one sense, because it’s familiar, and difficult in another sense, because your speaking voice range is limited. Go too low, and you might get a froggy, creaky sound – that’s actually another register called the fry or pulse register. Go too high, and it becomes very easy to shout and crack.

The following 3 exercises are designed to help you avoid either extreme, for a strong, healthy chest voice sound.

First up, we’re essentially speaking on pitch, with the phrase “that’s that.” The TH ensures we’re starting with airflow, and the wide, bright A sound helps counteract that tendency to get overly dark and woofy as we sing lower. If your sound disappears at some point, that’s normal! I’ll be playing for a variety of vocal ranges, so I don’t expect any one singer to comfortably sing all the pitches I provide. Let’s give it a try!

When we go higher in chest voice, we run into the danger of shouting – which typically happens as we get louder and our mouth starts to get wider and wider. So to counteract that, we’re using the vowel OH on the high note with this pattern. Especially if you start shouting and feeling strain, please drop out of this one and rejoin when we walk back down.

As I mentioned earlier, the range of chest voice is limited. For very high notes above your speaking voice range, we have to begin pulling in some lightness through mixed coordination or mixed voice. We’ll use vowels to help guide us into mix, with this pattern. The vowels are A as in CAT for a strong chesty foundation, EH as in BED, and then UH as in BUG. The EH and UH especially will encourage mix to extend your chesty sound into higher notes!
