Connect Breath To Sound
The goal is to feel gentle engagement of your abdominal muscles when you hiss and when you hum. This sets you up to engage those muscles every time you start to sing, so that your lower body helps control your airflow and your throat can remain relaxed.
Speak On Pitch
Sometimes we get “stuck” in head voice or we get shy, and “under-sing.” When it comes to low and medium-low pitches, you can instantly find your strength by speaking on pitch. For example [demonstrate on “auld lang syne”]. Now, don’t misunderstand me: if the pitch is higher than your speaking voice naturally goes and you find you’re shouting, the “speaking on pitch” strategy isn’t a good fit for that pitch.
High Notes Might Be Breathy Or Weak At First
My favorite first exercises for head voice include the owl hoot and the cuckoo clock sound. Vowels like OO and EE are great for exercising your head voice, so incorporate some slides on OO or EE as well. Semi-closed exercises like an NG or lip trills are also excellent for gently training some more strength in head voice.
Drop The Lyrics
I suggest WUH/MUH in general, something “spoken” like “yeah” for low notes that aren’t powerful enough, and a light “woohoo” sound for high notes that are feeling squeezed or strained. Build your confidence singing on syllables before you return to lyrics – and let it take as long as it takes! Maybe you sing the melody on WUH and can immediately return to lyrics, or maybe you need to keep it on WUH for several days.
Here are a few examples using the star spangled banner. If my low notes are weak I’ll use something strong and spoken. If my high notes are strained, I’ll first find some ease on whoo. And if I just want better tone quality and ease over all, I’ll sing the whole thing on WUH.
Shift Your Attention
Singing that feels good often sounds better anyways. And on the off chance that you sound good but feel bad, we don’t want that anyways! Singing that doesn’t feel good is a sign that something is off and you could hurt yourself if you keep singing in that way for an extended time.
