Hey, I’m Camille van Niekerk with 30 Day Singer. If a nervous, shaky voice is preventing you from singing for other people, here are a few exercises for greater relaxation and stability.

I’ve been singing on stage since age 6, and I can still remember the butterflies I felt in my stomach walking into that first audition. Despite years of experience, nerves are still something I – and most other singers – deal with. And while you do tend to feel less nervous as you gain performance experience, you also become better at managing the symptoms of anxiety you might feel.

The first thing I feel when I get nervous is tightness in my stomach. I might hold my breath or take high, shallow breaths, instead of the low, relaxed belly breaths I take when I’m at rest. So the first fix when you’re in a stressful situation and about to sing is to consciously relax your belly muscles and focus on low, slow breaths.

Exercise: Box breathing

A great exercise you can do backstage is box breathing. Try it with me: we’ll inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4 again.

Once you step onstage, your body will feel much calmer, and you’ll be set up for success.

Exercise: Hiss to hum

When you’re nervous, you might also forget to engage your body when you sing, reverting to just singing from the throat up, so to speak. We always want to gently engage our abdomen when we sing for a smooth, steady flow of air. A strong, consistent sound is the result. Feel the natural engagement of your abdomen when you exhale on a hiss.

Of course, you’re not going to hiss onstage, but you can use this exercise before singing to gently remind your body what to do.

Exercise: pulse x4, sustain for 5

Finally, we’ll establish that gentle engagement with a pulse and sustain. Let’s try a few together!

Try these exercises before a performance, and consider using them in your regular practice sessions as you envision singing for other people. A “mental” rehearsal is another great way to get used to singing in spite of nerves.
