Better singing isn’t as much about the quantity of time you practice as it is about the quality and consistency of your practice routine. You can transform your voice with a routine as short as 10 minutes a day. I’ll take you through a 3 step process that can really help to set your voice in the right direction.
1) Breath Work
Work with your breath first before you start to actually sing. Start with a regular exhale where your shoulders and jaw release as your breath drops. Then gradually start to add resistance by elongating your exhale and gently touching your tongue, lips and teeth together into a gentle tss sound. Remember to release the breath at the end when your body starts to squeeze in.
2) Circle of Vowels
Now let’s search for resonance with the sound-shapes wah and yah. With Wah work on relaxing your jaw. Allow the jaw to gently swivel back and just hang there on the ah. Trying to keep our jaw in that hanging position like the end of Wah. With these syllables we can gently stretch our vocal tract.
Great, now try to put all of these sounds together into one exercise. I call this the circle of vowels because the motion you make with your mouth feels and looks sort of circular. Okay let’s try singing this on a few different notes.
Tip#1: Let your breath drop low into your belly and back
Tip#2: Swivel your head from side to side to keep this area loose.
Even after just a few minutes of this, you may notice your voice has more ring, clarity, and effortlessness.
3) Use Consonants For Stability
Next try using consonants like M, N, or an Ng sound to help you build connection to your vocal support. Support is your ability to build pressure in your lower abdominal and back muscles in order to sing higher notes. These muscles should push down and out. If you under-support a note, you may sing too breathy, not get that nice ring in your sound, and fall under pitch.
If you over do it then the breath stops from having too much pressure. Let’s try a simple exercise. Feel your muscles begin to engage with the M sound and then flex out even more into the vowel. Then relax your support to fall to the second note. Now try in on your own as I gradually take us up to some higher notes.
Tip#1: Let some air out before you start singing.
Tip#2: Don’t forget to let the breath go at the end!
Good Work! Now try singing a song and see if your voice feels and sounds better!
