There are different types of counters.

Synchronous and Asynchronous counters.

In Synchronous counters, all flip flops are triggered with the same clock.
Synchronous counters are faster counters
They are also called as parallel counters.
Examples are Ring Counter and Johnson counter

In Asynchronous counters, different flip flops are triggered with different clocks.
Asynchronous counters are also called slower counters.
Examples are UP Counter Down Counter
