The previous section is about Number System. The concepts of Number System helps a lot in understanding Logic Gates.
Introduction to Logic Gates:
What is meant by a Logic Gate?
The name Logic Gate is derived from the ability of such a device to make a decision, in the sense that it produces one output level when some combinations of input levels are present and a different level of output is produced when other combinations of input levels are present.
The above definition states that the logic gate is a device.
Why the device is named logic gate?
It is named the logic gate because it got the ability to make a decision.
How the logic gate will make the decision?
When some combinations of inputs are provided then the device will produce an output based on the input.
As the input changes the output may vary.
The visualization of the logic gate can be made as shown in the image below.
What are the Input and output levels?
The input and output levels of the logic gates can occur only in 2 levels { 0, 1 }.
Any electronic device is based upon these 2 levels.
How 0, 1 can be transferred in electronic devices?
As electronic devices run by electricity practically there is no such thing called 0, 1.
0 and 1 ca be intreprutted as voltages.
In most of the cases, 0 is interpreted as 0 Volts and 1 is interpreted as 5 Volts. Most of the devices use these combinations.
There are different types of voltage combinations that can be taken but in our course, we will consider 0 as 0 Volts and 1 as 5 Volts.
