Here we will have an Octal Number System Detailed Explanation.
In our previous discussions, we had a discussion on Introduction to Decimal Number System and had an Introduction to Binary Number System.
In this discussion, we will have an Octal Number System Detailed Explanation.
Octal Number System:
Definition: An Octal Number System is a Positional Weighed System with eight unique symbols { 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 }. The Base or Radix of the Octal Number System is 8.
The definition states that the octal number has only 8 unique symbols they are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
As we have only 8 symbols the base or radix of the octal number is 8.
The representation of the octal number is ( 347 )8 with a base 8.
Why we have to represent with base 2?
For example, consider the number 347.
347 will also look like a decimal number system.
Because the symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are also there in the decimal number system.
In order to bring the distinguished octal number and decimal number, the base representation has to be used.
The definition also states that the octal number is a Positional Weighted System.
This means the value of an octal digit is based on its position.
For example, consider the following octal number 7777.
The value of each seven is different from the other and it depends on the position of the digit.
Even though we have 4 sevens in the octal number each sevens value is different from the other.
The value of the digit is produced by the product of digit by the base to the power of position as shown in the image below.
