Here we will have an Introduction to Binary Number System.

In our previous discussions, we had a discussion on Introduction to Decimal Number System.

The understanding of the Decimal Number System helps a lot in understanding the Introduction to Binary Number System.

Binary Number System:

Definition: A Binary Number System is a Positional Weighed System with two unique symbols { 0, 1 }. The Base or Radix of the Binary Number System is 2.

The definition states that the binary number has only 2 two unique symbols hey are 0, 1.

As we have only 2 symbols the base or radix of the binary number is 2.

The representation of the binary number is ( 100100 )2 with a base 2.

Why we have to represent ith base 2?

For example, consider the number 111.

In which number system the above number is in it is also in the decimal number system.

Because the symbols 0 and 1 are also there in the decimal number system.

In order to bring the distinguished binary number and decimal number, the base representation has to be used.

( 111 )10, ( 111 )2 first is the decimal number and the second is a binary number and their values are one hundred eleven and seven respectively.

The definition also states that the binary number is a Positional Weighted System.

This means the value of a binary bit is based on its position.

For example, consider the following binary number 1111.01.

Even though we have 4 ones in the integer part of the binary number each one’s value is different from the other.

The image below is the binary number with its bits position.

The value of the bit is produced by the product of bit by the base to the power of position as shown in the image below.

The image below shows the value of each one with respect to the position.
