How to Multiply Two Binary Numbers

The basic rules of binary multiplication are is as follows.

1 * 1 = 1, 1 * 0 = 0, 0 * 1 = 0, and 1 * 1 = 1.

We will try to understand the concept of binary multiplication using the following examples.

1. 1001 * 101

2. 1011.101 * 101.010

Example 1:

1001 * 101

Multiplication of two binary numbers is the same as the multiplication of two decimal numbers.

In the above example, we will multiply 1001 with the bit in the 0th position and the result of the multiplication is as shown below.

The result says that anything multiplied by 1 the same as the number itself.

Similarly, we will multiply 1001 with the bit in 1st position and the result is as shown in the image below.

The result of the above multiplication says that anything multiplied by 0 is 0.

Similarly, we will multiply 1001 with the bit in the 3rd position and the result is as shown in the image below.

Now we will sum up all the values and we will get the final result as shown in the image below.

Example 2:

1011.101 * 101.010

In the above example, we will multiply 1011.101 with the bit in the -3rd position and the result of the multiplication is as shown below.

Similarly, we will multiply 1011.101 with all the bits in -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 positions, and the result of the multiplication is as shown below.

Now we will sum up all the values to get the final result as shown in the image below.

The decimal point has to be taken after 5 bits as we do in the decimal number multiplication.
