Ever wondered why some mangoes of the same variety are a beautiful golden-yellow while others are a vibrant green? The secret isn’t a different speciesโit’s a simple but brilliant farming technique: bagging!
This video explains how the color of the protective bag plays a crucial role in the final color of the mango.
White/Translucent Bag: Allows sunlight to pass through, promoting the production of chlorophyll and keeping the mango’s skin green, even when ripe.
Red/Opaque Bag: Blocks sunlight, causing the chlorophyll to break down as the mango ripens. This reveals the yellow and orange pigments underneath, called carotenoids, resulting in a golden-colored fruit.
So, the color difference is just skin deep! Both mangoes can be equally ripe and deliciousโthe bag just gives them a different “outfit” for the market.
