Simple Cut TRICKS a Fig Tree Into Producing More Fruit #figtree #animation

It looks brutal, but intentionally wounding a fruit tree is a technique farmers use to shock it into producing a massive harvest. This video explains two methods to trigger a plant’s “survival mode” based on the plant hormone ethylene.

Physical Stress (Scoring/Girdling): Cutting shallow rings in the bark signals a threat to the tree. In response, it goes into a reproductive frenzy to ensure the survival of its genes, producing more fruit and seeds.

Chemical Stress (Ethephon): Ethephon is a chemical that releases ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that regulates ripening and stress. Applying it tricks the tree into thinking it’s stressed, triggering the same fruiting response without any cuts.

As our farmer explains, while the chemical method works, it’s more expensive. The age-old technique of carefully scoring the bark is often more cost-effective.
