The Most USELESS Flower in The World?! #mangosteen #animation

In the plant kingdom, the male flower usually has the most important job: pollination. But for the “Queen of Fruits,” the mangosteen, the male flower is completely and utterly useless for making the fruit we eat!

This video explains the bizarre and fascinating phenomenon of parthenogenesis in mangosteen trees. This is a form of asexual reproduction where the female flower can develop into a fruit without any fertilization from a male flower’s pollen. The resulting mangosteen is essentially a perfect clone of its mother plant.

So if the male flowers are totally redundant, why do they even exist? It remains a bit of a botanical mystery! Scientists believe they may be a “vestigial” trait from the plant’s evolutionary past.
