Quantum Chemistry 7.5 – Hydrogen Atomic Orbital Nodes

27.6K views on YouTube

Short lecture on hydrogen atomic orbital nodes.

A node is a location where the wavefunction is zero, thus there is no electron density. A radial node is a value of r at which all points have no density. An angular node is a value of theta and/or phi where all points have no density. The quantum numbers n and l determine the energy and shape of the orbitals (1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 3d, etc.) as well as the number of each type of node. The number of radial nodes is equal to [n – l – 1]. The number of angular nodes is equal to [ l ]. The number of total nodes is the sum of these, [n – 1].
