Quantum Chemistry 6.1 – Rigid Rotor Model
59.2K views on YouTube
Short lecture on the rigid rotor quantum mechanical model.
The rigid rotor is a quantum mechanical model system for the rotations of diatomic molecules. Two atoms of a given mass rotate around their common center of mass at a fixed bond length. The kinetic energy of the system depends on the angular momentum and moment of inertia of the system. The potential energy is zero at all angles of rotation for the fixed value of bond length. The moment of inertia can be computed by using the bond length and the reduced mass of the two atoms.
