How to make the sounds from Justice ‘Phantom Pt. II’ with DRC

French electro house duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, AKA Justice, have been producing and remixing tracks together since 2003. They first catapulted themselves into the mainstream with their remix of Simian’s ‘Never be alone’, released as Justice Vs Simian ‘We Are Your Friends’.

A huge club hit, such was the popularity of the track, it opened up the doors to a whole slew of remix opportunities, with requests from huge artists such as Britney Spears, Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk. It wasn’t until September 2005 that the pair’s debut solo single ‘Waters of Nazareth’ would be released on Ed Banger records, the label that instantly signed Justice based on the success of ‘We Are Your Friends’.

2007 saw the release of the Parisian pair’s much anticipated debut album entitled ‘✝’ (pronounced cross). Recorded throughout 2005/2006, the concept behind the project was an ‘opera-disco’ album, as Xavier de Rosnay explains:

“We stuck to our original idea to make a 2007 opera-disco album, even if we are conscious that some tracks don’t sound like proper disco at first listen. The best example is the song ‘Waters of Nazareth’, which does not sound like disco when you listen to it for the first time. But if you forget that everything is distorted, the bass lines are just really basic disco patterns.”

From this now classic electro-house album, this week’s DRC Sound Design Tutorial featured track is Justice – ‘Phantom Part II’. Lucas gets creative with his reconstruction of the lead synth and also shows us how to achieve the noise sound too.
