ATTENTION: All Pre-Gain values for DRC in this video need to be lowered by 0.250.
This is because this tutorial was made with an older version of DRC which had a different tuning on the saturation stage. We have corrected the values in the Ableton session.

Jan Blomqvist ‘The Space in Between’:
Born in the 80s and now based in Berlin, Jan Blomqvist is much more than just another techno worshipping DJ, unable to resist the call of the country’s creative capital. It is almost a disservice to refer to him as a DJ; more like a singer/songwriter, he has a head full of emotion and melodies, with which he is able to synthesise sensations.

Jan’s love of music and performing live started when he was just 10 years old when he got a guitar. Influenced by bands like The Rolling Stones, it was only a matter of time before he was part of a rock band himself. The attraction of following in the footsteps of his idol Mick Jagger slowly faded away however, as rock music failed to excite and inspire his creativity in the same way.

Done with rock, he needed to find a new way to express his musical ideas; enter the strange and exciting world of electronic music! Free from the confines of a just a 4-piece group, suddenly Jan realised he could have a whole orchestra at the command of his fingertips. The concept of an orchestra is something which stuck in his mind, with his live shows aiming to bring ‘concert techno’ into clubs.

We’re serving up a little slice of that sound today, with a look at 2018’s ‘The Space Inbetween’ (Ben Böhmer Remix). Sit tight for 16 minutes of sound design, as we guide you through some of the track’s atmospheric background sounds.

Enjoy this Jan-tastic DRC tutorial,
