How to make some sounds from Marc Romboy & Stephan Bodzin ‘Atlas’ with DRC

Are you sitting comfortably? If instead, you are currently standing right now, you may want to find yourself a seat before reading any further. Don’t worry, there’s no need to panic, it’s just another one of those ‘I can’t believe it has been that long since x was released’ moments, as we reveal that this week’s featured track is almost 20 years old!

As you will already know from reading the title of this article, the track we’re talking about here is ‘La Rock 01’ by French producer ‘Vitalic’. Released in 2001 (the inclusion of 01 in the track title is now painfully obvious!) It was part of ‘Poney EP’, the first release to bear the ‘Vitalic’ artist name.

Of the four tracks on the vinyl, ‘La Rock 01’ is easily the standout tune. It has a rough and raw edge to it, managing to bridge the genres of electronic and rock together, with thrashing synths and an overarching atmosphere of anarchism. It features build-up after build-up, as the main riff pitch bend at the end of each phrase, pushes us higher and higher, fuelling an ever growing anticipation of what’s coming on the other side of the drop. Spoiler alert: It’s another climb of course!

Because of its cross-audience appeal, the track can still be found in the setlists of eclectic DJ acts like ‘Fatboy Slim’ and ‘2 Many DJ’s’ today. (Well, when it is safe for us to return to the dancefloor again.)

This week’s DRC Sound Design Tutorial is a quick one, a super seven minutes of sound design, as Lucas shows you how to create the track’s bass sound.
