How to make the sounds from Freeez ‘I.O.U’ with DRC

As the winter weather starts to turn bitterly cold in parts of the Northern hemisphere this week, we have a rather aptly named artist for today’s DRC Sound Design tutorial. Today Lucas is taking on the 1983 electro track ‘I.O.U’ by the British group ‘Freeez’.

Created by John Rocca and founded in London at the tail end of the 70s, Freeez was originally a jazz-funk outfit, a project self-funded by Rocca released on his own ‘Pink Rhythm’ record label. The group had a changeable line-up consisting of various members, but it took a hot shot from across the pond to shine the bright spotlight of international fame onto them, in the form of prolific producer Arthur Baker. Immersed in the hip-hop-heavy 80s club scene at the time, New York-based Baker wrote and produced I.O.U, for the band as a result of them turning up on his doorstep unannounced, after they failed to get his attention from afar.

A band with a turbulent musical journey, Peter Maas was the only original member that stayed with the group throughout their history, even after they almost split for good in 1984. They ended up releasing music until 1987, which is the last time we had any fresh material from them. Anyways, like a multi-genre chameleon, something in Lucas’ environment inspired him to turn his wizard sound design skills towards this snapshot of 80’s electro, and now you can too with today’s DRC Sound Design Tutorial!
