Here is how I do four corner games in my K-5 classroom: I don’t jump into a totally new round without introducing the concept first, showing them what it will look like and playing some examples on the piano. There is a sign with the corresponding number in each corner of my room, in the same arrangement as the four corners of my display board. Students listen to the example and then walk quickly to the corner to vote on the answer. Once they are in the corner, they HAVE to stay there until the next question. This prevents students from running across the room at the last minute, and I’ve found that it also makes them choose a little more wisely. I often do one no-elimination round and one round where wrong answers mean you sit down. You can also play this with students at desks, writing the numbers on whiteboards and keeping score. I often tell students that we will do it this way if they get too rough or loud with the movement game. Different classes can compete against each other if you keep track of how many students were left at the end of the game and keep a running “four corners scoreboard.”
