Passive Interval Ear Training – Minor 2nds

6.4K views on YouTube

Can this ear training video possibly work? I’ve always been skeptical about exercises like this, so I set out to make one that might actually be useful. This composition is carefully constructed to let you hear how minor 2nds resolve in various harmonic contexts, which is what other ear training exercises often lack. Do I think you can put on this video, immediately fall asleep, and wake up with a complete aural understanding of the sound of minor 2nds? No! But as long as you balance more passive exercises like this with more deliberate ones, I do think this can help you develop a better ear to pick out specific intervals in melodies. SUBSCRIBE, because more videos are coming soon in this series.

How will you know that this exercise is working? You should start listening for minor 2nds in all the music you hear, especially at the end of melodies. Eventually, the minor 2nds should begin “lighting up” in your mind. The most common way for minor 2nds to resolve would be when the 4th degree of the major scale resolves down to 3, or when 7 resolves up to 1.
