Growing Frost Crystals for Macro Time-lapse Photography

In this macro photography tutorial, we are growing Ice crystals using dichloromethane. They grow quickly and disappear as fast as they came, but we can capture then with a macro lens for the few minutes they appear for. In this video we are taking timelapse videos of the ice forming and melting on a brush and a candle wick.

Dichloromethane is a volatile solvent that evaporates quickly at room temperature, taking a lot of heat with it. When it does this, small crystals of frost form on the fibres of the brush and candle wick. You can see them growing in real-time! We have speed up the process to watch the ice grow in macro!

CAUTION: The chemical we use in this video is very toxic and should be treated with respect. Always read the warning labels and take the proper precautions including limiting exposure and only using in a well-ventilated environment.
