In this cell biology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents a detailed and high-yield breakdown of Cell Junctions, explaining how cells connect, communicate, and coordinate within tissues. This lecture explores the structural and functional significance of these connections across epithelial and other tissue types.
We begin with an overview of the three major categories of cell junctions: anchoring junctions, occluding junctions, and communicating junctions. Anchoring junctions include desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, and adherens junctions, which mechanically link cells to each other and to the extracellular matrix via cadherins and integrins.
Next, we cover tight junctions (zonula occludens), which form selective barriers between epithelial cells and regulate paracellular transport. You’ll learn about their role in maintaining polarity and compartmentalization of the apical and basolateral surfaces.
Finally, we examine gap junctions, composed of connexins, which allow for direct cytoplasmic communication between adjacent cells, facilitating the passage of ions and small signaling molecules—crucial in tissues like cardiac and smooth muscle.
