「Learn Japanese」 How-to say “Before CLAUSE1, CLAUSE2” (Dictionary Form C1 + 前に + C2)

2.4K views on YouTube

CLAUSE1 (Dictionary Form) + 前に + CLAUSE2 as “Before C1, C2”

This grammar construct is used to convey that the contents of CLAUSE2 occur before the contents of CLAUSE1; in this pattern, CLAUSE1 is conjugated into the Dictionary Form regardless of what form CLAUSE2 is respectively conjugated into.

Example(s):

友達と一緒にゲームをする前に、宿題をする必要がある。
Tomodachi to issho ni game o suru mae ni, shukudai o suru hitsuyou ga aru.
(Before I play games with my friends, I need to do my homework.)

ダウンタウンに行く前に食べましょうか?
Downtown ni iku mae ni tabemashouka?
(Shall we eat before we go downtown?)

This grammar construct can also be used with NOUN + の前に in lieu of a CLAUSE with a predicate in Dictionary Form, in which NOUN denotes an activity or an event.

Example(s):

授業の前に文法を復習するつもりです。
Jyugyou no mae ni bunpou o fukushuu suru tsumori desu.
(Before class, I intend to review some grammar.)

会議の前に、発表を練習しました。
Kaigi no mae ni, happyou o renshuu shimashita.
(Before the meeting, I practiced my presentation.)
