Learn how to Oil Paint fresh, clean Winter Snow that doesn’t turn Muddy — with a warm winter glow in the sky and reflections in the water. In this Full Length oil painting tutorial from the Jerry Yarnell Inspiration of Painting PBS educational television series, Jerry walks through his simple, effective approach: plan your whites, block in darks first, and build believable snow using purple-gray shadows and a slightly tinted “not-quite-white” snow mix.
You’ll also see how he creates a glowing evening sky with warm peach tones, builds distant hills and snow covered pine evergreens, adds tree reflections, and finishes with icy knife lines for sparkle.

Jerry Yarnell uses water-miscible oil paints (or sometimes called water mixable oils) — meaning oils that can be thinned and cleaned up with water rather than solvents. See Jerry’s Oil Palette Layout sheet – helpful in arranging your oil paints and giving you an idea of the brushes and supplies you will need to complete an oil painting. https://yarnellart.com/oil-palette-layout-sheet

In this video you’ll learn:

Why snow isn’t pure white (and how to tint it correctly)

How to keep snow clean by leaving white areas and avoiding over blending

Mixing purple as a natural shadow color for snow scenes

Simple water + ice reflections, plus quick knife “ice lines”

Loose, suggestive trees (and the “don’t piddle, play, or putter” mindset)

This video is from the Inspiration of Painting PBS art instructional series video (3330 Warm Winter Glow) available at Yarnell Art website.
