Tony & Chelsea Northrup review of the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 – the ULTIMATE wildlife lens. They compare it to the Sony 600mm f/4, the Canon 200-800mm zoom, and the Sony 400-800mm zoon. Here’s some details:

Pricing and Mounts: It’s half the price of a 600 f/4 lens and available for L mount or Sony E mount (at 15 fps limitation).

Weight: It’s noticeably heavier than a 600 f/4 lens and significantly heavier than the Sony 600 f/4 (8.75 lbs vs 6.7 lbs). Using a tripod is highly recommended.

Features: It has an internal zoom, stabilization modes, a drop-in filter, white thermal insulation paint, a function ring, a click/unclick tripod mount, and a quick-release plate.

Image Quality: Sharpness is about the same as a 600mm when cropping and comparable to a smaller zoom, but real comparison photos are needed. The better ISO performance and shallower depth of field should be shown. May not be quite as good as a 600 f4 with a test chart.

Autofocus: Autofocus and subject detection were good with the S1R II, even picking up birds the Sony a1 didn’t find.

Best Use Cases: Best for shots when an animal gets close or when a subject flies overhead. Not recommended for handheld shooting.

Comparisons: It’s heavier and half the price of a 600 f/4, with similar sharpness. Comparison photos show how it compares to smaller zooms.

Testing: Test shots should include comparisons to a 600 f/4, a 200-800, and a 400-800.
