Rational Numbers | Definition + First Proof

We start by formally defining what the rational numbers are (think: fractions like 3/7). Then we prove our first formal claim about the rational numbers: that the sum of two rationals is another rational.

We follow the five step process for simple direct proofs:

1) Assumption
2) Definition of Assumption
3) Manipulation
4) Definition of Conclusion
5) Conclusion
