In this lesson we learn how to evaluate one-sided and infinite limits analytically. Some one-sided limits are no different than two-sided limits when evaluating, but many require a new method to evaluate. This can often result in infinite limits, where the limit at a particular point is not a finite number, but rather infinity or negative infinity. Thus we will also discover two-sided limits that require this new method because none of the previously learned methods of evaluating limits can be used. During our discussion of one-sided limits, we look at a step function, the greatest integer function, to help with understanding the usefulness of one-sided limits. Also, we briefly look at the properties of infinite limits, including the sum and difference properties, product property, and quotient property. There’s a lot to digest here, so buckle in and enjoy the ride!

Calculus requires a solid understanding of precalculus and algebra concepts and techniques including factoring, equation manipulation, trigonometric equations, logarithms, finding slope, graphing, and many more. If you are not familiar with these prerequisite topics, be sure to learn them first!
