I2C Explained: How Open-Drain and Pull-Ups Really Work

I2C is an open-drain protocol, and that single design choice explains almost everything about how the bus behaves. In this short we break down what’s really happening on the clock and data lines: inside the controller a transistor connects the line to ground, and when it switches on it pulls all the charge off the bus and dumps it into ground. That charge is supplied by a power bus, which is exactly why every I2C line is tied up to the supply through a pull-up resistor. Those pull-ups set the line’s maximum voltage to the power-bus voltage and, just as importantly, limit the current that flows to ground each time the transistor toggles on.
Understand this open-drain-plus-pull-up mechanism and I2C stops feeling like a mystery. You’ll see why the resistors are there, how the current path changes when the transistor is on versus off, and how the signal actually reaches the destination chip. It’s a quick, visual explanation for anyone designing or debugging an I2C bus on a real PCB, from students learning embedded communication to engineers laying out their next microcontroller design.
