How To Play Piano for Beginners, Lesson 9 || The Concept Of Musical Key
89K views on YouTube
In this episode of my beginners’ piano tutorial series I go over how to play the previous tutorial’s piece. Then we look at the concept of musical key, which is an incredibly important aspect of music theory, and essential to understand for reading all written music and playing the piano effectively.
You’ll also learn several other useful bits and pieces that often turn up in piano scores, including pickup bars/measures (short bars at the start of pieces of music that contain run-ins or “pickups” to the first phrase, usually in the right hand/treble clef part), dotted notes (ordinary notes lengthened by half; so a dotted crotchet/dotted quarter note in 4/4 time lasts for a beat and a half rather than a single beat) and ties (that attach two notes or chords of any length, so they sound as one, which is useful for carrying sounds across bar lines and notating awkward rhythms clearly). In the accompanying PDF (see link below) there’s a new piano piece for you to learn ahead of the next lesson.
