𧬠BIOLOGY FORM 3 β GENETICS
Lesson 1: Introduction to Genetics
π― Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Define genetics and related terms.
Explain the importance of genetics in living organisms.
Identify key contributors to the study of genetics.
Describe the basic concepts of inheritance.
π§ 1. Definition of Genetics
Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with the study of inheritance and variation in living organisms.
Inheritance refers to the passing on of traits (characteristics) from parents to offspring.
Variation is the differences that exist among individuals of the same species.
π¨βπΎ 2. Historical Background
The study of genetics began with the work of Gregor Mendel (1822β1884), an Austrian monk known as the βFather of Genetics.β
He conducted experiments on pea plants (Pisum sativum).
His experiments helped explain how traits are passed from one generation to another.
His findings are now known as Mendelβs Laws of Inheritance:
Law of Segregation
Law of Independent Assortment
𧬠3. Basic Genetic Terms
Term Definition
Gene A unit of inheritance that controls a particular trait. It is located on a chromosome.
Chromosome A thread-like structure in the nucleus made of DNA and proteins that carries genetic information.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) The molecule that carries genetic information in all living organisms.
Alleles Alternative forms of the same gene that control a specific characteristic (e.g., tall or short).
Genotype The genetic makeup of an organism (the combination of alleles).
Phenotype The observable characteristics or appearance of an organism.
Dominant trait A trait that is expressed even when only one allele is present.
Recessive trait A trait that is expressed only when both alleles are recessive.
Homozygous Having two identical alleles for a particular trait (e.g., TT or tt).
Heterozygous Having two different alleles for a trait (e.g., Tt).
π± 4. Importance of Genetics
Improvement of crop and animal breeds through selective breeding and biotechnology.
Understanding hereditary diseases and their prevention.
Forensic science β DNA testing for identification.
Conservation biology β maintaining genetic diversity in species.
Evolution studies β understanding how species change over time.
π§ͺ 5. Simple Genetic Experiment
Objective: To demonstrate inheritance of a trait using seeds or beans.
Select two types of beans β one red and one white.
Cross-pollinate them and plant the seeds.
Observe the offspring color pattern in the next generation.
Result: Traits from both parents may appear in predictable ratios (Mendelian ratios).
𧩠6. Key Concept Summary
Concept Explanation
Inheritance Passing of traits from parents to offspring.
Variation Differences between individuals of the same species.
Gene Basic unit of inheritance.
DNA Molecule that carries hereditary information.
Chromosome Structure containing DNA and genes.
π 7. Review Questions
Define genetics.
Who is regarded as the father of genetics?
Differentiate between genotype and phenotype.
What is the relationship between genes, DNA, and chromosomes?
Explain two reasons why genetics is important in agriculture.
π‘ 8. Summary
Genetics is a fundamental field of biology that explains why offspring resemble their parents, yet no two individuals are exactly alike.
It lays the foundation for understanding heredity, evolution, and biotechnology.
πΏ Extension Activity
Research how DNA technology is used in modern agriculture or medicine and present your findings.
