We begin by tracing the anatomical pathway of the olfactory nerve, starting from the specialized olfactory receptor neurons within the nasal epithelium. From here, we follow the olfactory filaments as they pass through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone to synapse within the olfactory bulb. We then explore the projection of the olfactory tract to higher brain centers, including the primary olfactory cortex, amygdala, and other limbic system structures responsible for odor perception and its emotional connections.

We also discuss the unique sensory role of cranial nerve I, emphasizing how it mediates the sense of smell without relaying through the thalamus before reaching cortical centers. The lecture covers the molecular basis of odor detection, from receptor activation to signal transduction and integration within the brain. We highlight the clinical relevance of olfactory nerve lesions, such as anosmia and hyposmia, and their common causes, including head trauma, upper respiratory infections, and certain neurodegenerative diseases.
