Join us for this lecture where Professor Zach Murphy will be presenting on the Enteric Nervous System (ENS). We begin by describing the unique anatomy of this “brain of the gut,” including its two primary plexuses: the myenteric (Auerbach’s) plexus, which primarily regulates gastrointestinal motility, and the submucosal (Meissner’s) plexus, which controls glandular secretion and blood flow to the mucosa. You will learn how these neural networks integrate sensory, motor, and interneurons to coordinate complex reflexes independently of the central nervous system while communicating with it via sympathetic and parasympathetic inputs.
We then discuss the functional significance of the ENS in regulating peristalsis, segmentation, secretion of digestive enzymes, and modulation of local blood supply. This includes how sensory neurons detect chemical and mechanical changes in the gut lumen, and how the ENS processes this input to generate precise motor patterns for digestion. We also explore how neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, nitric oxide, serotonin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide work within the ENS to fine-tune gut activity.
Finally, we integrate these concepts into the broader context of gastrointestinal physiology by explaining how the ENS interacts with hormonal signals, the immune system of the gut, and higher CNS centers.
