In Lesson 33, we learn the notation for opening and closing the hi-hat. We start by opening the hi-hat on the ‘an’ of beat 4 in an eighth-note time pattern. We then look at a disco pattern, a swing pattern, and various 8th-note open hi-hat variations. These patterns can be very tricky at first – play them as slowly as necessary.
