How To Play Piano for Beginners, Lesson 17 || Learning A Blues Piece

This is the seventeenth piano lesson in my series for on how to play the piano for absolute beginners. In this tutorial we learn a blues piece that I’ve written, and learn about an important new concept – triplets.

Triplets are a rhythmic technique in which three notes are fitted into the space that would usually be occupied by two, and played as equal length notes. So, for example, a quarter note/crotchet triplet in 4/4 time would consist of three quarter notes even spread over two beats, with each note two thirds of the length of an ordinary quarter note. You get a similar effect squashing other notes into shorter amounts of time than they would usually take: the overall technique is called “tupleting”, and triplets are the most common type of tuplets.
