A reader left a comment on one of my videos asking a question most writers are too afraid to ask: how do you arrive at a word to describe something? Did you invent it? Are you just that well read? Is it reasonable to turn way more nouns into descriptors than you thought? It’s one of the best questions I’ve ever gotten, because it’s really asking where fresh, original description actually comes from. The answer is not that you’re either born with it or you’re not.

In this video, I discuss the four repeatable methods writers use to find striking, specific, un-clichéd descriptive words: climbing the precision ladder (asking “what specific kind?”), borrowing vocabulary from specialist fields like wine tasting and perfumery and geology, crossing the senses through literary synesthesia, and bending a word’s grammatical job through verbing and noun-adjuncts. Each one comes with weak vs. strong examples so you can see the mental move in action, and a practical drill you can run on any flat sentence in your manuscript.

Whether you write fantasy, romantasy, or any kind of fiction, this is a deeper-level writing skill that will make your prose feel fresh and intentional instead of generic. Stop reaching for the first accurate word and let yourself find the unforgettable one.
