The “Unphotographable” Butterfly 🦋

The Purple Emperor butterfly is increasingly rare in the UK, but we have access to some specimens thanks to the Biological Photography and Imaging course at Nottingham University’s School of life sciences.

This butterfly is special. It has directional iridescence on each of it’s wings, making the stunning effect it makes in the light “impossible” to photograph. In this macro butterfly photography tutorial, we’re going to look at the lighting needed to best represent this butterfly and capture the colour and structure of the wings.
